A Title Explanation
I realize that the title of this blog is a little odd and not very self-explanatory, so I thought I'd give my few readers (most of which are my aunts, so they know the story anyways) an explanation.
My Nonno, the Italian word for grandfather, was an immigrant to the US and grew up in the small town of Coltura in the Italian Alps. He immigrated with his brother, Atillio, and they settled in Western PA where they moved around a bit, trying out different jobs and such. Livio Fedrizzi eventually found his home in Pittsburgh and started working at a grocery store/butcher shop, of which he would eventually become part owner. He married my grandmother, Irma Valetti, and they had 5 girls. Nonno was a very hard worker, a really smart guy, extremely kind and, above all, focused on his family. He put his 5 daughters through college and because of him and my grandma we are still all very close.
So, when I was a little girl he used to tell me stories and teach me Italian songs, words, phrases, ect. I remember how he would say that when he was young he and his brothers would go up on the mountain with the animals, where they would graze, and they would stay in this little stone hut building thing at night where they had one-legged stools to sit on. One leg! As a child I thought this was ridiculous... how can you sit on one leg?
Well, my cousins Felicia, Betsi, John, Andrew and Gianina have all seen this hut and this area.... and now it's my turn! My sources (aka cousins in Italy) report that those stools are still there so I think I'll be able to realize my goal of seeing at least one one-legged stool.
So now you know the reason behind the title of this blog and it won't seem so weird. I think my next post will be about my family, both here and in Italy. Consider it a reference guide for the future considering this blog is primarily for my aunts and mom and they'll already know who I'm referring to! Have a great Christmas!
