Resurrecting this Blog!

Though I know there are more visually appealing blog platforms out there, I've decided to resurrect this blog to capture my upcoming experience deploying with IBM's Corporate Service Corps (CSC) in October. What is CSC, you ask? 
"IBM’s Corporate Service Corps sends top-ranked rising leaders to work pro bono with NGOs, entrepreneurs, and government agencies in strategic emerging markets. " 

... is the official one-liner. 

To me, CSC is the opportunity to finally work on something that feels purely altruistic. We are not trying to increase margin, cut operating costs, make a process more efficient, or "win follow on work." My team, who I've been going through an intensive 3 month preparation with, comes from a diverse set of backgrounds and places. I know each person will bring a unique skill set and perspective to this team and, frankly, I'm ready to get started! (The work officially starts on Sept 28th so... I'm a bit early on this one.)

I know some that read this will be like "what the hell is a one legged stool" and honestly it's a very fair question! Please refer to the long ago written post, https://onelegstool.blogspot.com/2010/12/title-explanation.html, and feel free to peruse the other posts that I wrote as a 21 year old, optimistic and carefree college student. Please also forgive any misspellings or grammatical errors... 

I began this blog at a very different time in my life and I hope that now, as an older (definitely) and wiser (maybe?) professional I can capture this new experience here and contrast my current perspective with that of my past.

Deploying to Budapest

Our deployment starts in just 2 days! Despite some travel issues (hello, Philly, for an extra 24 hours), I am shortly en route from PHL to BUD. We received our clients and   SOWs about a month ago, at which point we dove into true research and project preparation. My team also had a virtual kickoff 2 weeks ago with our client, where we presented some initial content we developed to refine the overall objectives and scope of the project. Day Trip to Lago di Como

This past weekend my friend Jen and I took a day trip to Lago di Como and the town of Como itself. No, I didn't see George Clooney! I have to say, I was not as impressed as I was expecting to be! Having spent so much time in towns on Lago di Garda, I was expecting something similar but Como just wasn't as picturesque in my opinion. However, a lot of people in my program have visited Como and absolutely loved it, so my opinion may not really be an accurate portrayal of the general sentiment. The highlight of the trip was definitely taking the ferry around part of the lake. Here is video!

Visiting Coltura! FINALLY!

Folks, I've seen the one-legged stool! Or sort of. The problem is that the house fell in on itself 2 years ago, so I didn't actually "see" it! I was little upset about this when I first heard that you couldn't go inside but after putting the whole experience in perspective I've come up with this general conclusion. The stool was object to focus on, obviously. It embodied all the amazing places I had heard about for so many years and wanted to see for myself. The house where the stool was - I saw that and being there was simply amazing. As we drove to it I was just overwhelmed with thinking of my Nonno, walking this path in 1925 with his siblings and how different life must have been for them here. Seeing the house where my Nonno grew up was mind-boggling as well. Seeing the graves of my great-great-grandfather and mother made me speechless.
